The capacity to think critically about one’s scientific discipline, the ability to identify and analyze the general assumptions underpinning it, and the capacity to recognize the methodological purposes of a method are skills that are prized not only by those wishing to thoroughly understand the discipline they study, but also by those interested in the (general) possibilities and frontiers of knowledge provided by science. Those who study social science and the humanities (among others) typically have to learn, understand and develop the ability to critically appraise the system of knowledge the discipline engages with, whilst also learning about the principlesandmethods that generated it. Although disciplines vary in terms of what is studied (the object of investigation), the goals pursued, and their research methods, this variety does not preclude us from studying the methodological features they share. This book «Methodology of Science an Introduction» arose out of a desire to contribute to explanations of the methodological features that are sufficiently general as to apply to (almost) all the empirical sciences – and, therefore, to the natural and social sciences, just as much as the humanities. The topics we will cover relate to the general philosophy (or methodology)of science.

The aim of the paper «Sustainable Value Management - New Concepts and Contemporary Trends» is to present the findings of our own questionnaire-based quantitative study carried out in 2018. The study attempted to identify the correlations among the following variables: people-oriented management, non-people-oriented management, direct active and passive participation, and engagement in work. Two research questions drove the research process: (RQ1). What are the links between people-oriented management and non-people-oriented management, direct (active and passive) participation, and work engagement? (RQ2) Does direct participation (active and passive) mediate the relationship between people and non-people-oriented management and employees’ engagement? Research findings revealed that people-oriented management and active participation (i.e., co-deciding) are the most significant for work engagement. Not only does non-people-oriented management entail a low level of engagement but a lower level of direct participation as well. A structural equation model demonstrated that perceived people-oriented management and active participation were strong, positive, and significant predictors of work engagement.

Given that continuing antigenic shift and drift of influenza A viruses result in the escape from previous vaccine-induced immune protection, a universal influenza vaccine has been actively sought. However, there were very few vaccines capable of eliciting crossgroup ant-influenza immunity. Here, we designed two novel composite immunogens containing highly conserved T-cell epitopes of six influenza A virus internal antigens, and expressed them in DNA, recombinant adenovirus-based (AdC68) and recombinant vaccinia vectors, respectively, to formulate three vaccine forms. The introduction of the two immunogens via a DNA priming and viral vectored vaccine boosting modality afforded cross-group protection from both PR8 and H7N9 influenza virus challenges in mice. Both respiratory residential and systemic T cells contributed to the protective efficacy. Intranasal but not intramuscular administration of AdC68 based vaccine was capable of raising both T cell subpopulations to confer a full protection from lethal PR8 and H7N9 challenges, and blocking the lymphatic egress of T cells during challenges attenuated the protection. Thus, by targeting highly conserved internal viral epitopes to efficiently generate both respiratory and systemic memory T cells, the sequential vaccination strategy reported in «Antivirals for Emerging Viruses: Vaccines and Therapeutics» represented a new promising candidate for the development of T-cell based universal influenza vaccines.

Within the last decade significant progress has been accomplished in the field of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The articles in this special topics series «Immune Tolerance Post Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation» present progress in improving clinical outcomes using some of the most vibrant current research and translational approaches, including novel reduced-intensity conditioning regimens, donor graft engineering, quantification of themicrobiome, and tailored immunosuppressive therapies. Much of the progress described is due to improvements in immune reconstitution that results in durable allograft tolerance. Consequently, there is reduced graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) and improvement in controlling infectious disease complications. In addition, improved immune reconstitution also appears to facilitate much-needed graft-vs.-leukemia effects, as relapse remains the major challenge of our field. Many of the articles in this special topics series are organized around our increasing understanding of GVHD and a suite of new tools and approaches to prevent and treat this dreaded immune complication.

The field of Primary Immunodeficiencies (PID) is growing fast. In «Primary Immunodeficiencies Worldwide» over 400 diseases are defined and characterized by recurrent or chronic infections, autoimmunity, allergy, inflammation, or cancer as a consequence of genetic alterations affecting the immune system. The overall incidence of PID is around 1:10,000 and the majority presents early in childhood. Over the past decades, there has been an enormous increase in understanding of disease pathology, as well as clinical expertise and patient awareness worldwide, as a result of educational initiatives and scientific meetings by medical societies, supporting agencies, and patient associations. Humans are genetically heterogeneous, and the environmental characteristics and social habits differ dramatically in the several geographic regions of the world. Consequently, theprevalenceand distribution of the nine groups of primary immunodeficiencies vary worldwide, and the clinical profile of a particular PID will also vary. Most of the literature and discoveries about Primary Immunodeficiencies come from North America and Europe and refer to these geographical areas. This Frontiers Research Topic was developed to bring together original clinical and basic research from authors representing various geographical areas to highlight challenges and developments in epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of Primary Immunodeficiencies worldwide.

As Alexander Fleming predicted in 1945, bacteria have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Penicillin resistance was presumably first reported already in 1940 when Abraham and Chain reported that an enzyme from bacteria was able to destroy penicillin (Abraham and Chain, 1940). Every now and then mankind is shelled with news of infections and deaths caused by antibiotic and multiple drug resistant superbugs. This increase of resistance toward commonly in-use antibiotics, due to decades of their use, misuse and abuse, is today a global health concern. Research investments on development of new agents that can fight antimicrobial resistant microorganisms and the advent of antibiotic failure due to bacterial resistance has raised interest in other non-conventional alternative therapies. This Research Topic gathers some of the latest science around antibiotic alternatives and the effect of combined therapies. The call was launched in July 2017, and open-call papers were submitted until May 2018. This is the editorial article «Antibiotic Alternatives and Combinational Therapies for Bacterial Infections» introducing the 20 accepted publications addressing the antimicrobial action of varied agents representing the breadth and scope of research in this topic.

Microbes are ubiquitous and have ecological interactions with almost all life forms. Likewise, humans invariably engage in host-microbial interactions that could induce short-term or long-term effects. Some of these long-term crossover interactions have allowed successful colonization of microbes within or on the human body, collectively known as the human microbiome or human microbiota. The human microbiome is identified as playing a key role in various physiological processes like digestion, immunity, defense, growth, and development. Any dysbiosis in the human microbiome structure could induce the onset of various metabolic or physiological disorders. Cumulatively, the human microbiome is considered as a virtual human organ that is essential for host survival. Additionally, short-term biological interactions of the host and microbes have exposed microbes to the human cellular system. This exposure could have allowed the microbes to invade human cells for their growth and reproduction-induced onset of various infectious diseases. This book «Role of Microbes in Human Health and Diseases» incorporates a number of studies highlighting the role of microbes in human health and diseases.

Health care for obvious reasons has become an even more relevant – or at least more publicly discussed – topic in the past two years in the wake of the Covid19-pandemic. Digitalisation and its consequences for all areas of society has been a very much debated topic over the last decade. The combination of health care and digital solutions in that sector has become one of the focal points of attention when discussing how to deal with a pandemic of the scale of Covid19. Even though one wished that it would not need such a type of proof for the relevance of finding adequate digital solutions in order to offer more effective services whilst respecting the legal framework and noteably fundamental rights such as the right to privacy, it can be seen as a confirmation of the relevance of the research topic in the book «Data Protection by Design in the E-Health Care Sector. Theoretical and Applied Perspectives».

Confronting quality-of-care problems and achieving cost containment in healthcare delivery is one of the greatest challenges for the twenty-first century. Realising the promise of eHealth for ensuring sustainability of Europe’s healthcare systems is becoming urgent. When seen in a context of increasing needs for health personnel, growth in chronic disease, an ageing population and a consequential expected rise in public health expenditures, the successful utilisation of information and communication technologies becomes crucial. The eHealth Strategies Report prepared on behalf of the European Commission, Directorate General Information Society and Media, in 2011, points to implementation as a key challenge: “Reaching agreement about eHealth strategies and, even more so, implementing them has almost everywhere proven to be considerable more complex and time-consuming than initially anticipated. The complexity of eHealth as a management challenge was vastly underestimated”. If we want substantial advancements in healthcare information infrastructures, we need knowledge on actual experiences, and the contributions in the book «Information Infrastructures within European Health Care. Working with the Installed Base» aim to give the readers a better grip on what facilitates and hinders successful implementation and utilization.

New medical data is generated every second, adding to the source of potential “rawmaterial” required for generating innovative and groundbreaking medical insightsand expanding knowledge about health and well-being. For the first time in history, technologies exist that enable rapid and large-scale analysis of collected data, bringing the possibility of personalizing medicine within reach. Such positive prospects are countered by serious ethical, social, and legal challenges. Procedures for accessing medical data for research purposes, as well as for the reuse of medical data from clinical trials or studies, are in place and include safeguards to protect individual rights. However, no comprehensive scheme to donate one’s medical data posthumously exists, with the consequence of depriving individuals of the opportunity to act according to their moral values and preventing valuable datasets from being used in scientific research for the promotion of the public good. While the debate around the use of big data in medicine is far from new, this volume «The Ethics of Medical Data Donation» is the first to address the ethical issues with regard to the use of medical data after death. It brings together academic experts from ethics, law, and medical sciences to address the challenges associated with medical data donation. It is the result of a project developed at the Digital Ethics Lab at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, and funded by Microsoft Research.

In the book «The Future Health Workforce: Integrated Solutions and Models of Care» highlighted that the health workforce is a vital aspect of health systems, both essential in improving patient and population health outcomes and in addressing contemporary challenges such as universal health coverage (UHC) and sustainable development goals (SDGs). There is an increasing body of research that indicates that if the health workforce were to be redesigned from the ground up—based on population needs—we would see a very different configuration of the health workforce. This makes us wonder how one could design or develop innovative health workforce solution(s) for the future in order to make the health workforce more responsive to population needs.

Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. This open access book «Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management» offers recommendations and examples of how to improve patient safety by changing practices, introducing organizational and technological innovations, and creating effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care systems, in order to spread the quality and patient safety culture among the new generation of healthcare professionals, and is intended for residents and young professionals in different clinical specialties.

This important book «Healthcare as a Universal Human Right» outlines how, despite varying levels of global socioeconomic development, governments around the world can guarantee their citizens’ fundamental right to basic healthcare. Grounded in the philosophical position that healthcare is an essential element to human dignity, the book moves beyond this theoretical principle to offer policy-makers a basis for health policies based on public accountability and social responsiveness. Also emphasizing the importance of global cooperation, particularly in the area of health promotion and communication, it addresses, too, the issue of financial sustainability, suggesting robust mechanisms of economic and social regulation. New opportunities created by e-health, evidence-based data, and artificial intelligence are all highlighted and discussed, as is the issue of patient rights. Students and researchers across bioethics, public health, and medical sociology will find this book fascinating reading, as will policy-makers in the field.

The goal of this open access book «Rethinking Health Care Ethics» is to develop an approach to clinical health care ethics that is more accessible to, and usable by, health professionals than the now-dominant approaches that focus, for example, on the application of ethical principles. The book elaborates the view that health professionals have the emotional and intellectual resources to discuss and address ethical issues in clinical health care without needing to rely on the expertise of bioethicists. The early chapters review the history of bioethics and explain how academics from outside health care came to dominate the field of health care ethics, both in professional schools and in clinical health care. The middle chapters elaborate a series of concepts, drawn from philosophy and the social sciences, that set the stage for developing a framework that builds upon the individual moral experience of health professionals, that explains the discontinuities between the demands of bioethics and the experience and perceptions of health professionals, and that enables the articulation of a full theory of clinical ethics with clinicians themselves as the foundation. Against that background, the first of three chapters on professional education presents a general framework for teaching clinical ethics; the second discusses how to integrate ethics into formal health care curricula; and the third addresses the opportunities for teaching available in clinical settings. The final chapter, "Empowering Clinicians", brings together the various dimensions of the argument and anticipates potential questions about the framework developed in earlier chapters.

This open access book «Euthanasia: Searching for the Full Story» has been written by ten Belgian health care professionals, nurses, university professors and doctors specializing in palliative care and ethicists who, together, raise questions concerning the practice of euthanasia. They share their experiences and reflections born out of their confrontation with requests for euthanasia and end-of-life support in a country where euthanasia has been decriminalized since 2002 and is now becoming a trivial topic. Far from evoking any militancy, these stories of life and death present the other side of a reality needs to be evaluated more rigorously. Featuring multidisciplinary perspectives, this though-provoking and original book is intended not only for caregivers but also for anyone who questions the meaning of death and suffering, as well as the impact of a law passed in 2002. Presenting real-world cases and experiences, it highlights the complexity of situations and the consequences of the euthanasia law. This book appeals to palliative care providers, hematologists, oncologists, psychiatrists, nurses and health professionals as well as researchers, academics, policy-makers, and social scientists working in health care. It is also a unique resource for those in countries where the decriminalization of euthanasia is being considered. Sometimes shocking, it focuses on facts and lived experiences to challenge readers and offer insights into euthanasia in Belgium.

This open access book addresses a variety of issues relating to bioethics, in order to initiate cross-cultural dialogue. Beginning with the history, it introduces various views on bioethics, based on specific experiences from Japan. It describes how Japan has been confronted with Western bioethics and the ethical issues new to this modern age, and how it has found its foothold as it decides where it stands on these issues. In the last chapter, the author proposes discarding the overarching term ‘Global Bioethics’ in favor of the new term, ‘Bioethics Across the Globe (BAG)’, which carries a more universal connotation. This book serves as an excellent tool to help readers understand a different culture and to initiate deep and genuine global dialogue that incorporates local and global thinking on bioethics. Bioethics Across the Globe is a valuable resource for researchers in the field of bioethics/medical ethics interested in adopting cross-cultural approaches, as well as graduate and undergraduate students of healthcare and philosophy.

Health care systems are under reform in many countries. This typically involves a shift towards more competition. But still, markets are highly regulated. This study «On Competition and Regulation in Health Care Systems» analyzes competition and regulatory measures in four important fields using the modern tools of microeconomic theory and microeconometrics. The book demonstrates how price regulation interacts with the quality of care and shows that non-price competition amongst providers affects the social desirability of a gatekeeping system. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, the conventional wisdom of risk selection by German sickness funds is challenged.

Electronic edition. Canadian History: Post-Confederation. This textbook introduces aspects of the history of Canada since Confederation. “Canada” in this context includes Newfoundland and all the other parts that come to be aggregated into the Dominion after 1867. Much of this text follows thematic lines. Each chapter moves chronologically but with alternative narratives in mind. What Aboriginal accounts must we place in the foreground? Which structures (economic or social) determine the range of choices available to human agents of history? What environmental questions need to be raised to gain a more complete understanding of choices made in the past and their ramifications?

A darkly glinting novel set on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, «The Green Road» is a story of fracture and family, selfishness and compassion – a book about the gaps in the human heart and how we learn to fill them. The children of Rosaleen Madigan leave the west of Ireland for lives they never could have imagined in Dublin, New York and various third-world towns. In her early old age their difficult, wonderful mother announces that she’s decided to sell the house and divide the proceeds. Her adult children come back for the last Christmas, with the feeling that their childhoods are being erased, their personal history bought and sold. Anne Enright is addicted to the truth of things. Sentence by sentence, there are few writers alive who can invest the language with such torque and gleam, such wit and longing – who can write dialogue that speaks itself aloud, who can show us a million splinters of her characters’ lives then pull them back up together again, into a perfect glass.

«A Time for Renewal» by Anna Jacobs. In the wake of World War Two, the whole country is desperate for houses, with very little money available to rebuild. In the town of Rivenshaw in Lancashire, Mayne Esher has no choice but to turn Esherwood, the war-damaged stately home which has been in his family for generations, into flats. Rebuilding Esherwood won't be easy but with Judith Crossley by his side, Mayne hopes to restore it to its former glory. First, he must open it up to some of his long-suffering army friends . . . and it soon becomes clear that the house isn't the only thing which needs rebuilding.

Victor is fighting his late wife's rich and arrogant mother for custody of his daughter Betty. Ros has been cheated out of her money and has nowhere to go now she's been demobbed from the army. Daniel is still unsettled after his wartime experiences. He's waiting for his divorce to go through and has family problems that take him away from Ravenshaw. Francis hasn't even been in touch.

On top of these troubles, saving Esherwood proves to be a difficult undertaking for Mayne and Judith. And certain people will stop at nothing to prevent it from happening. In this time of renewal, will the group find a way to rebuild their lives, and the old house, as planned?

A young Saxon knight proves his worth in Sir Walter Scott’s «Ivanhoe» immortal classic blending history and romance.

In the twelfth century, England is in ruins. The tension between the Saxons and Normans are at an all-time high. While King Richard the Lion Heart is away, his brother Prince John sits on the throne, allowing the Norman nobles to ravage the Saxon countryside further. There is no one to protect them. Their land is repossessed. They are made to flee into the forests as outlaws, leaving behind the stand-in king who has forsaken them.

Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, disowned by his father after pledging allegiance to King Richard, has returned from the Crusades eager to win the love of Lady Rowena. The young knight, eager to prove himself worthy of her affections, sets out to demonstrate his merit—fighting his enemies with aid from the likes of Robin Hood.

A classic of historical fiction, Sir Walter Scott’s masterpiece brims with romance, adventure, and action.
