Will you, researcher, find your researcher ID among the 14 million ORCID IDs?

If NOT - then you are invisible in the world of science.

If YES, but your profile is partially filled or not public, then only you know about your research virtues.

ORCID ID is the international unique and permanent identification number of the researcher.

Launched in 2009 as a project to address the ambiguity of the author's name in scientific communication, ORCID has become an important part of the scientific infrastructure needed by researchers both for their own recognition and promotion, and for the exchange of information globally.

Benefits of using ORCID ID for a researcher:

  • a permanent identifier that remains the same throughout all stages of career development, even when changing the name;
  • solving the problem of ambiguity of the author's name;
  • presentation of own scientific publications, research career, scholarship and grant activities;
  • facilitating interaction with organizations, publishers and granters.

Advantages of using ORCID ID for research / higher education institutions:

  • improving the research profile of the institution by optimizing the visibility of its own researchers and their scientific achievements;
  • reducing the administrative burden by automating data entry processes;
  • solving the problem of multiple data entry and keeping them up to date both within the organization and between organizations through data exchange;
  • improving data quality (accuracy, completeness, consistency, reliability, etc.);
  • creating an infrastructure for integration and effective data collection, which is important for management decisions at the organizational level and tracking the results of research by researchers.

At the national level, ORCID ID promotes:

  • reducing bureaucratic procedures and duplication of effort at any stage of the research life cycle;
  • improving data quality (support for standard dictionaries, record formats and authentication methods);
  • ensuring effective data collection and reporting, which allows to objectively reflect the state of Ukrainian science;
  • use of generally accepted research data management practices, formation of future directions of global research and innovation systems;
  • monitoring the effectiveness of the national research system for a better understanding of the national scientific field and the development of sound policies;
  • improving the country's research image within internationally competitive research infrastructure.

One option that allows the country to make the most of ORCID is to create a national consortium.

This issue became relevant for Ukraine after the ORCID leadership expressed its support for our country in March 2022 and proposed to establish a Ukrainian consortium on a gratuitous basis for a period of three years (from 2022 to 2024).

Today there are 24 national consortia in the world. 12 of them - in European countries (Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, etc.). In the UK, all higher education institutions are integrated with ORCID. There are two national consortia in the United States.

The creation of a national consortium ORCID is a multifaceted issue that requires consideration and resolution of many issues, including legal ones. However, if a national consortium ORCID is established in Ukraine, it will be a great impetus for the integration of the national research infrastructure into the world scientific space.
