The world is changing, and with it
the requirements for our skills and abilities.
This means that education must not stop evolving either...

Among global trends in education, the open educational resources movement is gaining worldwide proportions. Their use in the learning process is becoming increasingly relevant. They contribute to widening access to quality education as they are seamlessly and jointly used by many countries and higher education institutions.

The Sumy State University Library took into account the latest educational trends and needs of the academic community and created the Open Educational Resources section on the library website. This section provides a list of websites and platforms that provide free access to open textbooks and educational materials from different fields of knowledge from renowned scholars and publishers, leading world educational institutions.

Open Educational Resources (OER) – teaching, learning and research materials in any format and medium that are freely available and open to users or licensed, in particular by the Creative Commons, for free use anytime, anywhere.

Open educational resources include: electronic textbooks, teaching materials, videos, full courses, course modules, audio materials, tutorials, lectures, presentations, tests, interactive materials, software (including mobile applications) and any other electronic learning tools.

The advantages of open educational resources:

  • free access to high quality learning information
  • use of foreign experience in the learning process
  • involvement of different types of perception of educational information
  • improving the quality of educational programs in educational institutions

One of the first initiators of the OER movement was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which founded the OpenCorseWare project. The goal of the project was to make all the institution's courses freely available to Internet users. Other institutions around the world have also actively adopted this educational initiative - Notre Dame OpenCourseWare, OpenStax College, Open Education North Carolina Textbooks, Open Textbook Initiative from the American Institute of Mathematics, Open Yale Courses, etc.

Also, the German National Library for Science and Technology has joined this initiative and offers digital educational resources and audiovisual materials from various fields of knowledge, which are available on its website in many languages, including Ukrainian. There are Open Educational Resources Search Index (OERSI), TIB AV-Portal and Twillo, which contain free educational materials with an open license, available for use in teaching and learning. In addition, German colleagues are committed to assist Ukrainian scientists in the use of these services in terms of disclosure of materials, translation and license agreements.
